Living between art and multiple sclerosis
Sometimes we don’t realize how much we have changed until we encounter something we once created. Over time, distance allows us to see our past work differently, revealing growth we may not have noticed before.
Essence in Bloom began as a return rather than a beginning. I revisited an earlier version of this painting and felt an unexpected pull to recreate her. The decision was not about correcting the past. Instead, it came from recognizing that I am no longer the same woman who painted her before.
This artwork became a reflection of personal evolution… quiet, gradual, and deeply human.
A Painting About Returning, Not Becoming
In a world that constantly celebrates transformation, growth often appears dramatic or visible. However, many meaningful changes happen quietly and without announcement.
Instead of chasing reinvention, the woman in Essence in Bloom reconnects with herself. Bathed in warm light, she gently touches her hair, expressing acceptance rather than achievement. Through this gesture, the painting reflects a moment of inner peace rather than external change.
Her presence represents something many women experience but rarely articulate: the relief of no longer fighting who we are.
Instead of transformation, this painting honors return.
The Symbolism of Flowers and Light
Surrounding the figure are blue and peach roses, chosen intentionally for their emotional symbolism. While blue roses suggest reflection and resilience, peach tones introduce warmth, compassion, and renewal. Together, they create a visual dialogue about healing and emotional growth.
Flowers, in my work, are never decoration. They act as companions to the figure, mirroring internal processes that unfold slowly over time.
Just like blooming itself, healing rarely announces its arrival. It happens quietly, layer by layer.
The Creative Process: Working in Layers
This mixed-media painting was created through a layered process designed to reflect emotional experience.
To begin, I applied texture paste and gesso using a paint roller, building a tactile foundation across the canvas. Then, once the surface dried, acrylic inks and alcohol inks moved organically across the composition. Rather than controlling every detail, I allowed the materials to respond naturally to texture and gravity. Finally, oil paints softened transitions and unified the visual rhythm of the piece.
Through this layered approach, structure meets fluidity, mirroring the emotional process of personal growth.
We carry both strength and softness at the same time.
Art as a Space for Self-Acceptance
For me, painting is not only about creating an image. It is a way of processing experience, emotion, and identity.
Essence in Bloom reflects a stage of life where self-acceptance becomes more important than perfection. The figure represents women learning to live inside their own stories with patience and compassion.
She does not hide her presence nor apologize for existing.
She simply allows herself to be.
Many viewers tell me they recognize something of their own journey when they see her. That connection is the true purpose of the work: creating a moment where art becomes a mirror rather than an object.
Why This Painting Matters Now
Repainting this artwork reminded me that growth is ongoing. We revisit parts of ourselves again and again, each time with new understanding.
Blooming is not a single moment; instead, it becomes a lifelong relationship with change, healing, and self-discovery. Ultimately, authenticity grows through repeated acts of self-acceptance rather than sudden transformation.
Essence in Bloom stands as a reminder that authenticity is not something we achieve once. It is something we practice daily.
And sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is return to ourselves with kindness.
