Living between art and multiple sclerosis
Art, in its various forms, offers a language of resilience that transcends the physical and emotional limitations of illness. Nonetheless, it becomes a tangible testimony to our human ability to transform adversity into something beautiful. Through every brushstroke, we discover our resilience.
We uncover that inner strength that drives us to move forward even when things seem most difficult. It’s not just that we endure, but we are capable of creating beauty despite challenges. Even better, we emerge even stronger from them.
Art as a Silent Witness
Through creating, we reclaim control amidst uncertainty. Painting has provided me with a safe space to “tell” or to unload emotions that cannot be expressed in words.
Like in the piece I will show you next. It was an artwork for a very special relative in the lives of my husband and me. He was going through one of the most challenging and painful times of his life. So, my husband suggested I paint a phoenix, which is said to regenerate or be “born again” from the ashes of its predecessor.
Resilience in Creativity
Facing a canvas and turn it into something beautiful becomes a reminder of our ability to find beauty in the midst of challenges. Each brushstroke is a visual echo of the emotional tones that define the journey of those facing multiple sclerosis. The idea of painting the phoenix seemed perfect to me because our loved one would have to rise or “be born again” from his own ashes. And he did; stronger and more resilient. I loved the process from the very beginning all through bringing it to where I wanted.
I enjoyed it immensely. It really took a lot of time, energy, and frustration, but every ounce of material, every color, and every layer on the canvas taught me and demonstrated that multiple sclerosis cannot defeat me. It’s not about what it dictates, but what I want.
The Art of Resilience
Although it may not be perceptible to the simple eye of any spectator, I know all my emotions, strengths, and victories were weaved into its creation. Furthermore, seeing the joy and gratitude on his face for us having contributed a little to his recovery made this entire process worthwhile.
