Rediscovering the Glow After the Storm

Living between art and multiple sclerosis

There’s a gentle kind of strength that awakens when we finally see beauty in ourselves again. Whispers of Light was born from that rediscovery… from moments of silence, reflection, and truth.

Oil mixed media painting of a plus-size black women surrounded by daisies and 2 hummingbirds

Living with multiple sclerosis has taught me that resilience doesn’t always appear as loud determination. Sometimes, it arrives quietly, like the flutter of hummingbird wings. Each day, I learn to move slower, to listen to what my body whispers instead of what it demands. And through painting, I rediscover the peace that still lives within me.

While creating this piece, I worked layer by layer. Collage added texture and meaning, inks gave it movement, and acrylics shaped the first forms. Finally, oil paint brought warmth and depth to her skin, turning the canvas into a story about acceptance and light. Every mark reminded me that healing, much like art, takes time and that both can be beautifully imperfect.

The Woman Who Inspired the Piece

This portrait celebrates women who carry their stories proudly and love themselves through every season. Her dark curls fall freely, her full lips glow in wine tones, and her eyes radiate confidence. The daisies around her symbolize renewal, while the hummingbirds whisper hope.

I wanted her to embody that quiet joy that comes after hardship, the kind that grows when we stop hiding and start embracing who we are. As I painted her, I felt my own courage returning, reminding me that vulnerability and beauty can exist together.

An Invitation to Remember Your Own Light

If you’ve ever doubted your reflection, let this artwork remind you that your light never fades. It might change color or intensity, but it’s always there, waiting to be seen again.
