Living between art and multiple sclerosis
Art has become my refuge, a space where I can express myself beyond words. Living with multiple sclerosis has changed how I interact with the world, but it has also deepened my appreciation for the moments when creativity flows. Luminous Presence was born from this need to celebrate inner strength and the luminous beauty found in every woman.
Moreover, creating art allows me to process emotions and release tension. Sometimes, the disease makes daily activities challenging, but when I paint, I focus entirely on what my hands and mind can achieve. This focus brings me a sense of peace and empowerment, which shines through every stroke of Luminous Presence.
The Story Behind Luminous Presence
This mixed-media piece features a plus-size woman with curly hair adorned by a delicate pink daisy. Her gaze is soft yet determined, and flowers in pink, yellow, and white surround her. I began with layers of paper, added gesso and inks, shaped the figure with acrylics, and finished with oil paints. Each layer represents patience, care, and the joy of creating despite physical challenges.
In addition, the textures and colors interact with light, giving the portrait a dynamic presence. As the viewer moves or as sunlight changes, the painting seems to come alive. This interplay of light and shadow mirrors the fluctuations I experience living with multiple sclerosis, where some days feel brighter than others.
Art as Therapy and Connection
Living with multiple sclerosis can feel isolating. Painting reconnects me with my body, my hands, and my emotions. Applying textures, exploring light and shadow, and blending colors gives me a sense of control and peace. Luminous Presence reflects that process, turning personal struggle into celebration and beauty.
Furthermore, art creates a bridge to connect with others. When someone views this painting, they may feel seen, inspired, or comforted. For example, several people have shared that the gentle strength of the figure reminds them to embrace their own challenges with compassion.
Why This Piece Matters
The portrait invites viewers to embrace their own strength and authenticity. Its textures, colors, and vibrant floral elements symbolize growth, resilience, and the light that shines within. Moreover, the details, the pink daisy, the colorful flowers, the confident expression, encourage reflection on personal experiences and self-acceptance.
In addition, this piece promotes representation. By highlighting plus-size women, women of color, and diverse body types, Luminous Presence encourages broader appreciation for beauty in all its forms.
