Brush Away Stress: How to Soothe Anxiety with Art

Living between art and multiple sclerosis

Through painting, especially as someone living with multiple sclerosis, I’ve found an outlet to express my deepest emotions or to release all the built-up tension onto the canvas. And the great thing is that paper—or in this case, the canvas (or whatever surface I’m working on)—can handle everything you throw at it.

It’s also a real bonus that I’m completely obsessed with paper, and I absolutely love making collages. However, these aren’t just random pieces I pick. Instead, I let my intention guide the process. Of course, my love for vintage-style paper, especially ones with writing on them, plays a huge role in my choices.

Focus Brings Me Calm

As I’ve mentioned before, I really enjoy creating art with different textures—not only the ones you can feel but also visual ones. Naturally, writing is an essential element in my art as well.

Working with paper always gives me a sense of peace. In fact, most of my art begins with applying paper to the surface I’ll paint on. When it comes to choosing these papers, I go with my intuition, allowing my subconscious to lead the way.

By focusing on the selection of papers to activate the surface, I don’t leave room for my mind to wander into feelings of frustration or loss. Rather, I’m so concentrated on my art that there’s no stress or anxiety about things I can’t control. Instead, I channel my energy into creating something beautiful with my hands.

Proven Benefits

Several benefits of art have been backed by research. For instance:

  1. Stress Reduction: Art offers a healthy escape to release tension and worries. Additionally, focusing on a creative activity can lower cortisol, the stress hormone.
  2. Decreased Depression and Isolation: Engaging in artistic activities not only boosts mood but also provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Furthermore, it helps us connect with others and build meaningful relationships.
  3. Visual Expression for Solving Verbal Problems: Art provides a unique form of communication that goes beyond words. Thus, creative expression is a safe and effective way to process and express emotions and thoughts.
  4. Creativity and Self-expression: Art allows us to work through sensitivity and mobility deficits, as well as cognitive challenges. Plus, through the process of creating, we can explore our emotions and express them in a meaningful, non-verbal way.
  5. Emotional Expression: The creative process serves as a safe outlet for expressing difficult emotions, which, in turn, helps ease stress and anxiety.
  6. Cognitive Strengthening: Multiple sclerosis can affect decision-making and planning abilities. Therefore, focusing on creating art helps exercise and strengthen these skills over time.
