Living between art and multiple sclerosis
The Softer Side of Courage
Courage often looks different than we expect. Sometimes it’s fierce. Other times, it’s soft. Still, it stays present in ways we don’t always notice. Because of that subtle presence, I wanted to explore its quiet strength. A Cup of Courage grew from my desire to show this gentler side of bravery, especially the one that appears during everyday moments.
Building the First Layers
This mixed media piece began with collage elements that felt warm and intentional. I placed phrases that carried truth and tenderness, allowing them to guide the early stages of the canvas. “You are enough” grounded me while the first layers were forming. As the process continued, inks and pigments shaped the flowers surrounding the woman. Soon, her presence felt strong but gentle. Then acrylics brought her joyful smile to life, reinforcing the emotional warmth I wanted the piece to hold. Ultimately, each layer built a story of resilience and softness.
Painting Through My MS Journey
My experience with multiple sclerosis influenced every brushstroke. MS continues to challenge me; however, it also helps me stay deeply connected to my body. I paint to release fear and tension. I paint to celebrate what my hands can still create. Additionally, I paint to remember that healing is not linear. This artwork reflects that process. It honors the courage found in simply showing up, even on days when movement feels heavy or uncertain. Through art, I reclaim parts of myself that illness tried to quiet.
A Moment of Joy, Held Gently
The woman in the piece sits with her coffee, unhurried and open to stillness. Her curls spill freely, carrying a sense of ease. Bright blossoms surround her, symbolizing the growth that happens quietly over time. Moreover, they remind us that healing can bloom even in difficult seasons. The scene offers a small but meaningful moment of joy; one we often overlook while rushing through life.
Your Invitation to Connect
As I worked on this canvas, I kept returning to the idea that courage does not demand perfection. Instead, it grows slowly. It appears in tiny decisions: choosing rest, choosing joy, choosing softness. Even the smallest act of self-kindness can shift how we carry our days. Because of that, this artwork remains close to my heart.
