This mixed-media piece on canvas features a plus-size woman, seemingly Hawaiian, crowned with a vibrant mix of tropical pink and orange flowers and palm leaves. To begin, I created the foundation of the piece by layering acrylic inks and water to let the colors flow naturally across the canvas. This fluidity of the ink brings an organic sense of movement, allowing the painting to evolve in unexpected ways. Additionally, I used alcohol inks, which blend and react in unique ways, enhancing the depth and richness of the composition.
At the heart of the artwork is the woman, her expression serene yet powerful. The tropical flowers and palm leaves framing her face symbolize a deep connection to nature and inner strength. Meanwhile, the sunset and sea in the background evoke a sense of peace and calm. The warm hues of orange, pink, and gold in the sunset contrast beautifully with the cooler blues and greens of the sea, creating a balanced and harmonious composition.
Inspired by the phrase, “Beauty is not in perfection, but in authenticity,” this painting celebrates the idea that true beauty lies in embracing who we are, flaws and all. Perfection, in its traditional sense, doesn’t exist in this piece. Instead, the authenticity of the woman, her connection to the natural world, and the fluidity of the colors together tell a deeper, more personal story.
Through this piece, I hope to convey the message that our real beauty comes from embracing our true selves. Like the painting itself, our stories are layered, textured, and constantly evolving. It’s through accepting and expressing our authentic selves that we find our own unique beauty.
Ultimately, this artwork serves as a reminder: beauty doesn’t lie in perfection. Instead, it’s found in the authenticity we embrace and share with the world.
