Living between art and multiple sclerosis
The Story Behind the Artwork
Life often teaches us that the smallest things can bring the greatest happiness. My latest mixed-media artwork, Small Joys, Big Smiles, captures this truth in a gentle and colorful way. It portrays a plus-size woman smiling warmly, surrounded by vibrant hydrangeas and three buzzing bees. These elements symbolize joy, diligence, and the beauty in everyday moments.
Moreover, this piece is a reflection of personal growth and resilience. Each smile and every detail carries a story. For example, the bees remind us to notice the little things, while the hydrangeas represent serenity and growth. Altogether, they create a sense of harmony and balance.
How I Created This Piece
This 16 x 20-inch artwork was built layer by layer. First, I applied textured paste, then subtle collage elements, followed by flowing water-activated pigments. Acrylics shaped the figure, and oil paints added depth and warmth. Each layer reflects resilience, hope, and the courage to celebrate small victories.
In addition, I intentionally let the pigments flow freely, symbolizing the unpredictable moments in life. This technique allowed each piece to become unique, just like our experiences. The combination of media creates texture, movement, and a sense of energy throughout the canvas.
The Personal Meaning
Living with multiple sclerosis taught me to notice even the tiniest achievements. Small Joys, Big Smiles reminds us that happiness is often found in simple moments. Every smile, buzzing bee, and vibrant flower encourages mindfulness, presence, and gratitude.
Furthermore, I painted this woman smiling because she reflects hope. Even in challenges, we can always find reasons to celebrate and feel joy. The artwork encourages viewers to pause, appreciate, and focus on what truly matters.
