Living between art and multiple sclerosis
A Personal Journey in Art
Art has a unique way of reflecting our personal journeys. My latest piece, Small Joys, Big Smiles, was inspired by my own experiences living with multiple sclerosis. This 16 x 20-inch mixed-media canvas portrays a plus-size woman smiling among hydrangeas and three playful bees. The artwork represents finding joy and gratitude, even in life’s most challenging moments.
Furthermore, this piece captures the importance of noticing small victories. The bees remind us to appreciate life’s little blessings, while the hydrangeas symbolize serenity, growth, and balance. Together, they create an uplifting scene that encourages reflection and emotional connection.
The Creative Process
I built this artwork layer by layer to give it depth and movement. First, I applied textured paste, then added subtle collage elements. Next, I let colored powders activated with water flow freely across the canvas, creating organic shapes and vibrant textures. Acrylics defined the figure, and oil paints added warmth and finishing touches.
Additionally, this layered approach mirrors life’s complexity. Each layer reflects resilience, hope, and mindfulness. It allows viewers to see the beauty in imperfection and the power of small moments.
The Meaning Behind the Smile
The central figure smiles as a symbol of hope. Even in difficult times, we can find reasons to celebrate. The bees, the flowers, and the flowing colors all serve as gentle reminders that happiness is often found in life’s simplest moments.
Moreover, this artwork encourages us to pause, breathe, and cultivate gratitude. It is a reflection of personal strength and an invitation to embrace joy, no matter the circumstances.
Bringing Inspiration Into Your Space
Small Joys, Big Smiles is more than a piece of art; it is a source of daily inspiration. Its vibrant colors, layered textures, and thoughtful details can uplift your home or workspace. Imagine the positivity it brings as a visual reminder to notice life’s small joys every day.
