Peekaboo / Te veo

Obra de arte en medios mixtos sobre lienzo del Múcaro/Búho de Puerto Rico asomando sus grandes ojos. Este trabajo fue hecho con papel cartulina, yeso, papel de seda, plantillas para crear las diferentes hojas que rodean al ave, pintura acrílica y carbón.

Esta ave es endémica de Puerto Rico y es, relativamente abundante y ampliamente distribuido en la Isla. También lo llaman mucarito o buhíto. Puede medir cerca de 10 pulgadas, aunque la hembra tiende a ser un poco más grande y en su periodo adulto, exhiben plumas marrones o gris pardo en todo el dorso, cola y alas, y plumas blancuzcas en sus cejas, pecho y abdomen. Tiene unos grandes ojos rojizos y un pico filoso que está encorvado hacia abajo. Como datos curiosos, este búho, carece de plumas en las patas, puede girar la cabeza casi completa y las plumas de sus cejas forman un círculo que intercepta los micro-sonidos que luego transmite hacia su par de oídos.

Viviendo en uno de los campos de Puerto Rico, lo escuché muchas veces, especialmente, para el tiempo de marzo a mayo, aunque no pudimos verlo, a menudo podíamos oírlo cuando se movía de rama en rama.

Mixed media artwork on canvas of the Múcaro/Búho from Puerto Rico peeking out its big eyes. This work was done with cardstock, gesso, tissue paper, stencils to create the different leaves that surround the bird, acrylic paint and charcoal.

This bird is endemic to Puerto Rico and is relatively abundant and widely distributed on the island. It is also called mucarito or buhito. It can measure about 10 inches, although the female tends to be a little larger, and in its adult period, they show brown or gray-brown feathers all over their back, tail and wings, and whitish feathers on their eyebrows, chest and abdomen. It has large reddish eyes and a sharp beak that is curved downward. As curious facts, this owl lacks feathers on its legs, it can turn its head almost completely and the feathers on its eyebrows form a circle that intercepts the micro-sounds that it then transmits to its pair of ears.

Living in the country in Puerto Rico, I heard it many times, especially from March to May. Although we couldn’t see it, we would often hear it moving from branch to branch.
